The use of cognitive-behavioral techniques has become increasingly popular among couple and family therapists throughout the world. The focus of this article is about the uniqueness of these techniques. The power of cognitive restructuring with maladaptive schemas is discussed, along with the use of some of the standard behavioral techniques for change, namely communication training and problem-solving skills. In addition, the flexibility and integrative potential of cognitive-behavioral techniques with couples is highlighted and illustrated in a detailed case example with a couple in crisis. Lastly, the contents of the article suggest that cognitive-behavioral techniques may also be adaptive to numerous cultures because it focuses on modifying specific thinking styles that tend to cause conflict.
